Vrouwen en Nederlandse artiesten grijpen de macht op de festivalpodia

Vrouwelijke en Nederlandse artiesten zijn aan een sterke opmars bezig in het Nederlandse festivallandschap. Bij meer dan een derde (34%) van alle muziekoptredens op de festivals stond een vrouwelijke artiest op het podium en dat aandeel was nog nooit zo hoog; in 2016 was het nog 18%. Nooit eerder stond er bij een groot Nederlandse festival bij meer dan de helft van de programmering een vrouwelijke artiest op het podium, in 2022 was dat wel het geval bij drie festivals: Best Kept Secret, Motel Mozaique en Welcome to the Village. POPLIVE @ Dutch conference for venues, festivals & events

On 19 September 2022 the Dutch annual conference for pop music venues and festivals took place at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht. POPLIVE researchers Erik Hitters and Martijn Mulder contributed to this conference by organising a panel session in which they reflected on five years of POPLIVE research. They presented the most important findings of live music in the Netherlands before, during and after COVID, titled ‘Venues and Festivals at a tipping point. After, they discussed the outcomes with Berend Schans (director of the industry association VNPF) and Margriet van Kraats (Creative Director of TivoliVredenburg).

The effect of COVID on visitor motivations of pop concerts

After two years without live music in the Netherlands, most COVID restrictions were lifted in spring 2022 and live concerts returned with a record number of concerts planned during the year. However, as live music is audience-centered, it is important to consider how the pandemic has affected demand for the live music industry. Commissioned by POPLIVE, Master student Kevin Belzer gained insights into how the pandemic has affected visitor motivations of popular live music attendees by answering the question: What is the effect of the COVID pandemic on the visitor motivations of pop concert attendees?

POPLIVE onderzoekt concertbeleving [in Dutch]

In het voorjaar van 2022 deed POPLIVE-onderzoeker Martijn Mulder onderzoek naar de publieksbeleving bij popconcerten. Concertbezoekers die deelgenomen hebben aan dit onderzoek zijn voor, tijdens en na het concert gevolgd en ondervraagd door de onderzoeker: voorafgaand aan het concert kreeg de bezoeker een vragenlijst over de motieven om het concert te bezoeken en de verwachtingen; tijdens het concert (tussen de muziek door) beantwoorde de deelnemer enkele hele korte vragen over de beleving op dat moment en meteen na afloop van het concert is de bezoeker geinterviewd door de onderzoeker over de beleving van de bezoeker tijdens en meteen na het concert. Door deze specifieke onderzoeksopzet, waarbij de beleving zoveel mogelijk in het moment gemeten wordt, hopen we een beter inzicht te krijgen in de beleving, de waarde en betekenis van het bijwonen van popconcerten. Deze kennis draagt bij aan het beter begrijpen en erkennen van de waarde van livemuziek voor individuen, helpt de sector de live-ervaring te verbeteren en kan beleidsmakers en subsidieverstrekkers helpen bij het waarderen van de popsector. De eerste resultaten van dit onderzoek worden verwacht in het najaar van 2022.

Dutch Live Music Monitor launched

POPLIVE presents the first Dutch Live Music Monitor, an overview of twelve years of live music in the Netherlands (2008-2019) consisting of almost 300.000 gigs by 30.000 artists. Among other things, the monitor describes the development of pop venues and festivals in general, artist’s live careers, indexes of the most healthy live music cities, venues and festivals and trends in relation to genre and gender in live music.

In a panel at the Eurosonic ’22 conference, POPLIVE-researcher Martijn Mulder launched the report, presented the most interesting results and discussed these with a panel of Dutch music industry people. The future of music festivals in cities: an analysis of stakeholders’ pursued values and experienced effects

Together with the rapid growth of urban music festivals in the second decade of the 21st century, most cities densified and gentrified at an equally fast pace. This increasingly leads to challenges for all stakeholders involved in urban festival planning: do we have enough suitable festival locations? How do we prevent nuisance? How to find a balance between the needs of both festival goers and local communities? How do we sustain our inner city festival culture?

Whitepaper – A glimpse into the future of livestream music experience

In 2021, we live in a world where virtual live music has become mainstream, at least temporarily. More than a year ago, the corona crisis turned the entire music sector upside down, forcing music venues, festivals and artists to find alternative ways to stage the artists’ performances. Commissioned by POPLIVE, Pink Kattenberg developed a whitepaper to start a discussion about livestreaming experiences. Outlining various future scenarios, the paper provides the music industry a look into the future.
